Steiff Safety

The Safety of Steiff Products

Seams & Eyes of a Steiff Product Must Not Tear or Break.
For this reason, the strength of the seams is tested. The eyes are subjected to tensile force of 90 Newtons (=9 kg). This guarantees that no one will be able to injure themselves on the animal's eyes.

Two types of eye fasteners.
The Safety Eye: This is attached like a rivet to the sewn shell before turning. This type of eye is used for all soft-filled animals and always used on designated Baby Products.
The Pull-In Eye: A long needle is used to stab through the head and sew on the eye with a thread. To give it extra anchorage, a small dab of adhesive is placed between the eye and fabric. Where this method of attachment has been used, a small indent can be felt in the nape of the neck.

The Plush of a Steiff Product Must Be Highly Flame Resistant.
All fabrics used in Steiff products undergo extensive burning test.

A Steiff Product Must Not Stain or Bleed.
Every plush fabric, every ribbon and even the thread undergoes the 'sweat & dribble' test. A piece of the test material is wetted with standardized test solution, then placed with control strips between two glass slides and weighted down. After 24 hours the control strips must still be pure white in color.
Button in the Ear.
Once final inspection and testing have been successfully completed, each Steiff product get a tag and a button in its ear. This is attached to the left ear in such a manner that it will not come off
